5 Social Media Content Ideas to Help You Post Regularly

Jul 1, 2018 12:32:52 PM / by Mike Chen

Remember when we all thought that social media sites, like MySpace, were a flash in the pan? These days, you'd be hard-pressed to find any article or video online that doesn't include the requisite social share buttons. The ubiquity of social media is borne out by the sites' earnings, as well -- in Q3 of 2017, Facebook reported its highest revenue ever.

As a small- to medium-sized business owner, you understand the importance of social media marketing (SMM). What you struggle with is generating social media content ideas.

Not to worry -- we've got you covered. Check out these innovative forms of content for social media.

1. What's a Video Worth?

If a picture is worth a thousand words, as the aphorism goes, then what is the value of a video when it comes to content for social media? It's hard to quantify, but it's a lot. Fully one-third of all time spent online is spent watching videos.

Creating your own video is best, but of course not every company has the resources to make that possible. If you can't create your own video, consider outsourcing the job. Lastly, you can also share a video that has already been posted -- just make sure to give credit where credit is due.

2. Tag! You're It!

When was the last time you saw a Facebook or Instagram post that reminded you of a friend? Chances are, it was recent. While it's relatively easy to "share" that post on your friend's account, "tagging" them is even faster.

From a business perspective, asking followers to tag their friends is a super smart social media move. Think about it -- if you are tagged, it's very likely that you'll check out the original post. And it's also likely that your friend knows you well enough to recommend businesses that you will then follow yourself.

Don't be shy. Encourage tagging. It almost guarantees that you will widen your audience.

3. Hop On Trends

This is one of the best Facebook post ideas around. Hop on the bandwagon and participate in #ThrowbackThursday, #MotivationMonday, or whatever hashtag-driven, alliterative trend is right for your industry.

4. Ask the Audience

No, this isn't a #WayBackWednesday to when Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? was popular. It's a surefire way to generate content for social media marketing purposes.

People love to give their opinion -- so ask for it! You can set up a poll, announce a caption content, ask for submissions of ideas, or simply engage your audience by asking about where they live or how they use your product.

A custom hashtag will help this strategy succeed, and a little incentive in the form of a prize or giveaway never hurts, either!

5. Start a Series

Looking for social media post ideas? An ongoing series makes it easy to check off the task once a week or once a month. Try offering tutorials, answering follower questions, or spotlighting a lucky customer.

The key here is, again, choosing a custom hashtag, encouraging shares and tagging, and staying consistent with the regular series post.
